In the foreground is the column that greets visitors to Venice, and part of Palazzo Correr. The colouring of the painting is distinctive, with the sky in shades of pale pink, white and light blue. There are boats on the canal; the day is clear and fine. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
