The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Doge’s Palace, seen from the Grand Canal, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground are some boats sailing on the Grand Canal, while further back one can see the bell tower of St Mark’s with the splendid Doge’s Palace. The two columns of St Theodore and St Mark also stand out. The water of the canal, in which the Doge’s Palace is reflected, is shaded in pale green and light blue. The sky is slightly cloudy, with a few clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto created two other variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
