An original and rare 18th-century view of the Dogana and the church of Santa Maria della Salute, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied by vessels of various sizes. Canal painted the water in shades of light green and blue. On the other bank of the canal is the Punta della Dogana, beside the splendid church of Santa Maria della Salute, painted by Canaletto in the morning sun. The sky is slightly cloudy, shaded in light blue, with white and pale pink for the clouds. The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto created another variant of this work.
