A luminous and rare historical view of the port of Naples and smoking Vesuvius, painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli. In the foreground is the port with its busy traffic of trading boats and sailing ships. Castel dell'Ovo is prominently depicted.
The sky is cloudy, but the sun (not shown in the picture, as it is assumed to be at the viewer's position) lights up the port. The dominant colour of the painting is a light blue, present across large areas of the sky and the waters of the Bay of Naples. The painting is in a private collection.
