Original 18th-century engraving of the town of Mestre on the Venetian coast, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the central foreground of the painting there is the canal, with its boats and steps leading to the square, bustling with carriages and travelers, and featuring scenes of daily life. The city, with its palaces and shops, unfolds to either side of the square. The sky is clear, but there are a few clouds on the horizon.
The engraving is undated; other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
