The artwork
Original, luminous view of the entrance to the Venice Arsenal, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. The foreground shows the canal, with several boats anchored on the shore and gondolas maneuvering. A bridge connects the two banks of the canal, and behind it are the two gates of the Arsenal. On the left side, in particular, is a building with the coat of arms of the Republic (the winged lion) and three statues. At the base, two more lions guard the entrance to the Arsenal. The sky is a clear, bright blue, with a few white clouds.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1732. Two other variations of this work exist, created by Canaletto.
