An original and rare 18th-century view of the Grand Canal near San Simeone Piccolo, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied by boats of various sizes. Canal painted the water in shades of light green and blue. Venetian palazzi line the Grand Canal, and on the left a church can be admired. The sky is slightly cloudy, shaded in light blue, with white for the clouds. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1740. Canal created other variants of this work.
