"The valley of the Nervia" is an oil painting on canvas made by Claude Monet in 1884. This work is part of the period in which the artist explored the coasts and hinterland of the Ligurian Riviera, in Italy, in early 1884.
Monet spent about three months in the area, settling in Bordighera, and was struck by the light and the local landscapes, which he considered a new experience for his painting. "The Valley of the Nervia" depicts the valley of the Nervia River, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea, and includes the village of Camporosso, nestled among the hills. In the background you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Maritime Alps, on the border with France.
In this painting, Monet uses light and bright tones to represent the scene, capturing the atmosphere. The painting is currently kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
