The artwork
Niccolò Codazzi's Campo Vaccino, painted in the second half of the 17th century, depicts a view of the Roman Forum, then known as "Campo Vaccino" because it was used as pasture. The work is a magnificent example of Baroque vedutism, in which Codazzi combines architectural observation with scenographic imagination. The ruins of ancient temples, the remains of arches and columns emerge majestically, while figures of shepherds, animals, and commoners enliven the everyday scene.
The artist, known for his precise perspective and mastery of lighting, balances the contrast between the grandeur of ancient Rome and the simplicity of 17th-century life. The clear sky and golden light create a poetic and melancholic atmosphere, transforming the view into a reflection on time, memory, and the beauty of ruins. This work perfectly embodies the spirit of Rome as an eternal and nostalgic city.
