The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, also known as the Cenacle, is a wall fresco created between 1494 and 1498 commissioned by Ludovico il Moro for the refectory of the convent adjacent to the sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. This work, which measures 460×880 cm, is one of the most famous representations of the Last Supper and a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. However, due to the experimental technique used by Leonardo, incompatible with the humidity of the environment, the work suffered a poor state of conservation, faced by one of the longest restorations in history, which lasted from 1978 to 1999.

The painting is based on the Gospel of John 13:21, where Jesus announces betrayal by one of his apostles. Leonardo innovated traditional iconography by exploring the "motions of the soul" of the apostles, capturing their surprised and disconcerted reactions to the announcement of the betrayal. The composition of the fresco is characterized by extreme attention to detail and by the arrangement of the apostles in four groups of three, different but symmetrically balanced, which generate a visual echo starting from the central figure of Christ. Leonardo places Christ at the center of the painting, in the foreground, creating a central axis in the scene both for the lines of the architecture and for the gestures and lines of force of the apostles.
