Claude Monet's painting "The Turkeys", painted in 1877, fits into a particular context of the artist's career. It was commissioned by the wealthy financier Ernest Hoschedé for the living room of his castle in Montgeron, south of Paris. Monet painted this and three other paintings inside the residence, capturing scenes from the park.
The work depicts a meadow where some turkeys are freely scratching around, with groups of trees in the background delimiting the plain and a part of the facade of the castle of Montgeron in the center. It is interesting to note the compositional approach that, in some ways, recalls the photographic shot, with some figures that do not appear entirely in the field of vision.
The painting remained in Ernest Hoschedé's collection until 1878, and then passed through the hands of several collectors and gallery owners over the years. In 1947, it was acquired by the French State and initially destined for the Louvre Museum, then the Galerie du Jeu de Paume in Paris, before finally finding its final home at the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.
