Isaac Tirion's Map of European Trade Routes is an unusual and historically significant map, published around 1750, illustrating a proposed trade route to connect Amsterdam to the Indian Ocean without having to circumnavigate Africa or cross hostile territories under Ottoman control. The journey begins in Amsterdam, sailing north around Scandinavia, through the White Sea to Arkhangelsk, in northern Russia. From there, the traveler would ascend the Dvina River, cross overland to Moscow, then follow the Volga River to Astrakhan, on the Caspian Sea. The route continues overland through Iran (Persia) to Hormuz, at the entrance to the Persian Gulf, from where the Indian Ocean could be safely accessed.
This map provides excellent geographical details along the route, highlighting major cities, rivers, and mountain ranges, while remaining quite essential overall. It focuses on the strategic passage through central Europe, Russia, and the Middle East, emphasizing the practicality and security of this alternative trade corridor in the 18th century. Tirion's work reflects the geopolitical and commercial concerns of the era, offering a navigable and overland route to connect northern Europe to the riches of the Indian Ocean, combining river navigation with land transport. The simplicity in design, with only the main natural and urban features marked, focuses attention on the novelty and feasibility of this trade route concept.
