Original 18th-century engraving depicting the first page of a series of views by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. Canaletto used this engraving as the cover for a collection of London engravings. The small inscription contains Canaletto's name and a reference to Mr. Giuseppe Smith, who suggested the engravings to be represented.
This first engraving is undated. Numerous other variations of this work by Canaletto exist.
