The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century view of the Riva degli Schiavoni, featuring the Doge's Palace, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground are the Column of St Mark and the splendid Doge's Palace, with the mooring quay for boats in front of it, and the start of the Riva degli Schiavoni. Further back, Venetian palazzi overlook the Grand Canal. The sky is slightly cloudy, shaded in light blue with white for the clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto created other versions of this work.
The painting is part of a private collection.
