The artwork
An original and rare etching of the prison in Venice, linked to the Doge’s Palace by the Bridge of Sighs, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Piazzetta San Marco, with a detail of the Doge’s Palace on the left. Next to the palace Canaletto has depicted the Venice prison, a large rectangular building facing the Riva degli Schiavoni. The sky is clear with a few clouds on the horizon. The etching is dated between 1735 and 1746. Other variants of this work exist.
