The artwork
An original and rare etching of the Portique à la Lanterne by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the portico, with a lantern by the central column, hanging down from the centre of the vault. Beneath the colonnade a street is depicted, while further back are some houses. On the right is part of a Romanesque temple. The sky is clear with a few clouds on the horizon. The etching is dated 1740. Other variants of this work exist.
The painting is on display at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA.
