An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Porta Portello in Padua and the Brenta canal, by Giovanni Antonio Canal in watercolour on paper. In the foreground is the left bank of the canal, with its high retaining walls. Further back one can make out the Porta Portello buildings and the bridge reaching the other bank of the Brenta canal, busy with small boats. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1740.
