A luminous and refined historical view of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, painted by Bernardo Bellotto. The church is shown on the right of the painting, with Baroque details and its tall bell tower. In the square in front are a great number of the faithful, pilgrims and noble Roman citizens with their carriages. On the left, by contrast, is the Column of Peace, rising high into the clear sky of a fine feast day in Rome.
The painting is dated 1739; another variant of the work exists.
