The artwork
The Haywain Triptych is an oil painting on panel by Hieronymus Bosch, datable to around 1516 and held in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It is signed "Jheronimus Bosch" on the central panel.
The work explores the themes of greed, sin and human vanity through a symbolic and allegorical language. The central panel shows a huge cart piled with hay, a metaphor for material craving and earthly desire, while human figures scramble around it, representing the struggle of avarice and moral corruption. In the side panels Bosch depicts scenes of paradise and hell, combining realism with grotesque fantasy, with deformed creatures and symbolic details warning of the consequences of vice. The intense colours, crowded compositions and wealth of detail invite the viewer to profound moral meditation. The work reflects Bosch's unique ability to fuse satire, allegory and visionary imagination, turning an apparently everyday subject into a complex moral and spiritual narrative.
