An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Grand Canal towards the Rialto Bridge, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied by boats of various sizes, including some gondolas. Canal has painted the water in shades of light green and blue. Prominent on the left of the painting, side by side, are the Venetian palaces, reflected in the canal. The Rialto Bridge is barely visible at the far end. On the right, other palaces are reflected in the waters of the canal. The picture, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal painted numerous variants of this painting.
