An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Grand Canal with San Simeone Piccolo and the church of the Scalzi, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied by boats of various sizes, including some gondolas. Canal has painted the water in shades of light green and light blue. Prominent on the left of the painting, side by side, are the Venetian palazzi, reflected in the canal. On the right are further palazzi and boats moored along the bank. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1738. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
