The artwork
The Garden of Earthly Delights triptych, painted by Hieronymus Bosch between 1490 and 1510, is one of the most enigmatic and visionary masterpieces of the Flemish Renaissance. The work consists of three panels: the left one depicts the Earthly Paradise, with Adam and Eve and scenes of creation, while the central panel shows a surreal landscape peopled by human figures immersed in sensual and allegorical pleasures, symbols of earthly vices and temptations. The right panel depicts Hell, with grotesque punishments and deformed creatures warning of the consequences of sin.
Bosch uses vivid colours, meticulous detail and extraordinary imagination to create a complex, layered world rich in moral and religious symbols. The work invites the viewer to reflect on good and evil, on the fragility of the human condition and on the tension between virtue and sin, establishing Bosch as a master of allegorical and fantastic vision.
