The artwork
An original 18th-century view of the entrance to the Grand Canal from the Punta della Dogana, in Venice, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, on the left, is part of the church of Santa Maria della Salute, with its forecourt. Next to the church is the Punta della Dogana. The Grand Canal occupies the centre, plied by vessels of various sizes, including some gondolas. Canal painted the water in shades of light green and blue. Prominent on the right of the painting is a row of Venetian palazzi overlooking the Grand Canal. The sky has some pale clouds on the horizon, but the day remains fine. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Canaletto painted numerous variants of this picture.
