The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of the Grand Canal seen from the Piazzetta on a foggy day, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the Grand Canal, plied as ever by numerous boats of various sizes. Further back, veiled by the fog, are the Doge's Palace and St Mark's bell tower, with the other buildings. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1755. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
