An original and luminous painting of the return of the Bucintoro to the Molo on Ascension Day, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the basin, with all the boats around the Bucintoro, the standard of the Serenissima flying. In the background the painting shows the Doge’s Palace and the other buildings of Piazza San Marco. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated around 1732. Canaletto painted numerous variants of this painting.
