The artwork
An original and luminous depiction of the Bucintoro returning to the Molo in Venice on Ascension Day, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the basin with all the boats around the Bucintoro, flying the banner of the Serenissima. The painting shows the Doge's Palace and the other buildings of St Mark's Square. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham, UK.
