The artwork
An original and luminous depiction of the return of the Bucintoro to Venice on Ascension Day, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the basin, with all the boats gathered around the Bucintoro, flying the standard of the Serenissima. The painting also depicts the Doge’s Palace and the other buildings of Piazza San Marco. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated around 1759.
