This fascinating map, titled "Syria et Assyria ad mentem Ptolomei aliorumq.", is a significant work by the renowned cartographer Herman Moll (1654-1732), published in London by printers Thomas & John Bowles around 1755. It is part of his work "Geographia Classica", an atlas that drew upon the geographical knowledge of antiquity.
The title itself, "Syria et Assyria ad mentem Ptolomei aliorumq." (translated: "Syria and Assyria according to the opinion of Ptolemy and others"), reveals its deep connection with classical cartographic tradition. The map is based on the geographical descriptions of Claudius Ptolemy, one of the most influential geographers of antiquity, whose "Geographia" from the 2nd century AD influenced European cartography for centuries. The addition "aliorumq." (and others) suggests that Moll also integrated other, probably more recent or alternative, sources to enrich the representation of the regions of Syria and Assyria. This fusion of ancient knowledge and more modern contributions was typical of 18th-century cartography, which sought to reconcile classical learning with new discoveries and surveys.
The map is an example of the copper engraving technique common at the time for the production of high-quality maps. Although the basic copy was probably uncolored, many maps of the era were subsequently hand-colored to highlight borders, topography, or decorative elements.
Moll's engravings are known for their clarity and ability to convey a sense of accuracy, despite the geographical data available being limited compared to modern standards. The precision of the lines and the aesthetic composition contribute to making this map an artistic object that reflects the taste and techniques of its time.
