Andrea Mantegna's “St Sebastian” depicts the martyr saint pierced by arrows, a symbol of courage and Christian faith. The athletic, idealised body is rendered with anatomical realism, emphasising the muscles and the tension of the pose, while the face expresses serene suffering and devotion.
Mantegna uses a close-up perspective and a sober architectural background to create depth and focus attention on the saint. The work combines dramatic pathos with formal perfection, turning martyrdom into a symbol of spiritual resistance. The care taken over details, fabrics and chiaroscuro reflects the painter's Renaissance mastery, fusing realism and idealisation.
