The artwork

An original and luminous 18th-century depiction of St. Paul's Cathedral in Rome, painted by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the large church with a two-tiered colonnade, a double bell tower, and a large central dome. In the small square in front of the church there are scenes of everyday life. The sky is clear, but there are a few deep pink clouds on the horizon.

There are other variations of this work by Canaletto. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1754. The work is exhibited at the Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, USA.
