The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of St Mark's Square, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground are the Basilica and the Doge's Palace, lit by a fine morning sun. In the square, filled with tourists and citizens, are a few stalls, while the three flagpoles fly no flags. But the most interesting feature lies in the details of St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace, finely painted by Canal. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1742. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA.
