An original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, looking south-west, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the rectangular square, with the great bell tower of St Mark's in the centre. Behind the bell tower a large Venetian palace overlooking the square can be seen. The square is full of people in scenes of daily life. Prominent on the right is the clock tower, with the other Venetian palaces side by side. The sky is clear with a few white clouds on the horizon. The picture, an oil on canvas, is dated 1763.
