The artwork
Original 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, looking southwest, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground there is the rectangular square, with the large bell tower of San Marco at its center. Behind the bell tower there is a large Venetian palace overlooking the square. There are many people in the square, and scenes of daily life are depicted. The clock tower and other Venetian palaces arranged side by side are clearly visible on the right side. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1763.
There are many variations of this work painted by Canaletto. It's exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA, USA.
