The artwork
An original and luminous 18th-century view of St Mark's Square, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the rectangular square with a few people, while in the background one can admire St Mark's church with its famous bell tower. Around the square stand the palazzi with their arcades, housing shops. A distinctive feature of the painting is the colour of the sky, with pink and light blue clouds that loom without threatening the fine day. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
