The St Jerome by Antonello da Messina portrays the saint in his study, absorbed in reading and spiritual contemplation. The gaunt, concentrated face, lit by natural light, shows the profound psychological introspection that characterises Antonello.
The saint is surrounded by realistic details: the book, the skull and the writing implements, symbols of knowledge, meditation and vanitas. The panel reveals Flemish influence in the use of oil and the meticulous rendering of detail, combined with the volumetric solidity and restraint typical of the Italian Renaissance. The work conveys calm, solitude and moral rigour, an expression of 15th-century spirituality.
