The artwork
A rare 18th-century engraving of the square in Venice, made by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, with pen and ink over pencil. One of Venice's two columns is highlighted, but Canaletto doesn't reveal which one it is: the sketch above suggests it's the Lion of Saint Mark, but it's not certain. Beyond the column, on the right side, the detail of a Venetian palace can be seen, while further in the background there is a sketch of the Church of Santa Maria della Salute.
The engraving is dated 1725.
