In 1882, Claude Monet, a key figure in Impressionism, settled in Pourville, a small coastal village in Normandy, where he created a series of paintings centered on the circus landscape. Among them "Path at Pourville" stands out, a work that captures the essence of a fleeting moment under the summer light.
The painting depicts a vast field of wheat stretching towards the horizon, bordered by a row of trees, with the sea barely visible in the background. Monet focuses on the rendering of light and atmospheric variations, using rapid and visible brushstrokes to suggest the movement of the wheat in the wind and the flickering of the light.
The colours are applied to create a sense of depth and vibration, with hues ranging from the golden yellows of the wheat to the soft greens of the surrounding vegetation, to the blues and greys of the sky and sea.
The work is an example of Monet's search for the instantaneous impression, the "moment" rather than a faithful representation of reality. The composition is open, suggesting a continuity of space beyond the edges of the canvas.
