The artwork
The Self-Portrait with Eryngium, painted by Albrecht Dürer in 1502, is an oil painting on panel in which the artist depicts himself half-length, his gaze directed towards the viewer. Dürer holds a small sprig of eryngium, a symbol of fidelity and nobility of spirit, which gives the portrait a symbolic as well as aesthetic meaning. The artwork highlights the artist’s attention to the detail of the features, hair and fabrics, demonstrating his technical virtuosity and the precision of Northern realism.
The confident posture and intense gaze convey self-awareness and mastery of his own talent, anticipating the modern conception of the self-portrait as a celebration of the individual. The neutral, dark background sets off the figure, creating a strong contrast of light that brings out Dürer’s three-dimensionality and commanding presence.
