The artwork
Transcendent and rare historical view of Rome featuring Castel Sant'Angelo, painted by Gaspare Vanvitelli. Rome is depicted in the distance, with the Tiber seemingly flowing towards the viewer. The details are softened, and the river is crossed by the bridge with its three Romanesque arches. On the left bank of the river, human figures are represented along with anchored boats. There are also other smaller, almost imperceptible boats near the bridge. In the center, you can notice the dome of St. Peter's and the Roman palaces.
It is worth noting the shift in sky tones: at sunset, the right side features mixed hues of blue and azure, while on the left the colors are lighter.
This painting is also part of the prolific output that Vanvitelli created during his stays in Rome.
