The work
Carefully crafted archaeological view of Rome, published at the end of the 16th century
This view offers a meticulous representation of ancient Rome within its walls, with particular attention to the major buildings outside them as well. At the bottom of the map, a legend identifies the main monuments and landmarks.
The map is based on the work of Nicolas van Aelst, engraved around 1575. Some historians, as reported by Bifolco, have attributed this view to Gian Giacomo de Rossi, who republished the map in 1637, adding his own address and date. However, Bifolco believes that the view was almost certainly published around 1600.
The map is oriented with east at the top, allowing for a detailed and unique view of the city as it was in ancient times.
