Jan Janssonius's "Roma Hodierna" map is a rare and extraordinary modern view of Rome, taken from his Theatrum Celebriorum Urbium Italiae. This bird's-eye plan, adorned with an ornamental cartouche, depicts the city as it was around 1550.

It includes important ruins of ancient Rome, such as the city walls, the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, and the Roman Forum. In the foreground, in the left corner, one can see the Papal Palace and the Obelisk of Caligula and Nero's circus.

Jan Janssonius (1588-1664), a renowned 17th-century geographer and publisher, was known for his detailed and artistic maps. His earliest works date back to 1616. He collaborated with Henricus Hondius to re-edit the Mercator-Hondius atlas, expanding it into the Atlas Major. His skill in combining geographical precision with aesthetic elegance is evident in the "Roma Hodierna" map, which offers a rich and detailed vision of the city.

Feel history under your fingertips

Our reproductions are faithful to the original and printed on fine Amalfi paper.

It is a paper made exclusively from cotton fibers, thick and naturally porous, yet soft to the touch, with characteristic deckled edges that attest to its artisanal craftsmanship.

It is still made today according to ancient medieval techniques, in the workshops of Amalfi.
