The artwork
An original and luminous depiction of the Bucintoro passing in front of the Doge’s Palace in Venice, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the basin, with all the boats gathered around the Bucintoro, flying the standard of the Serenissima. The painting depicts the Doge’s Palace and the other buildings of Piazza San Marco. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Canal painted numerous variants of this picture.
