An original and luminous depiction of the return of the Bucintoro to Venice on Ascension Day, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the basin, with all the boats “dressed” for the festival, gathered around the Bucintoro, flying the standard of the Serenissima. The painting also depicts the Doge’s Palace and the other buildings of Piazza San Marco. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated. Canaletto created other variants of this work.
The painting is on display at the Aldo Crespi Collection, Milan.
