An original and luminous depiction of the return of the Bucintoro to Venice on Ascension Day, by Giovanni Antonio Canal. In the foreground is the basin with all the boats around the Bucintoro, flying the banner of the Serenissima. The painting shows the church of Santa Maria della Salute (in the distance), while closer at hand are the Doge's Palace and the other buildings of St Mark's Square. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated about 1745-1750. Canal painted numerous variants of this work.
