The artwork
An original and rare 18th-century depiction of an ambassador's reception in Venice, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. A distinctive feature of the painting is the Piazzetta in front of the Doge's Palace, with ships at anchor and the crowd of nobles who have come to pay their respects to the new ambassador taking up his post in the city of Venice. Further back one can admire the columns of St Mark and St Theodore and the dome of the church of Santa Maria della Salute. The sky is overcast, with threatening rain clouds. The painting, an oil on canvas, is dated 1730. Canaletto created several variants of this work.
