The rare view of Rome engraved by Jacob von Sandrart is considered one of the best representations of the "Eternal City" from the Baroque era. This finely crafted and decorated engraving depicts Rome enclosed by the ancient Aurelian Walls, along the Tiber River. It includes iconic monuments such as the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, San Giovanni in Laterano, the Baths of Diocletian, and the Vatican with St. Peter's Basilica and Castel Sant'Angelo. Of particular note is the great Colonnade of St. Peter's, completed by Gianlorenzo Bernini in 1666.
The quality of the engraving is exceptional, offering a panoramic view of the city with clearly distinguishable details. The map includes the title cartouche with a portrait of Pope Innocent XI, the coats of arms of the 14 traditional districts of Rome, and a table identifying 253 ancient buildings and 178 churches. At the bottom, seven views show some of the most important churches in the city.
Engraved by Sandrart, a renowned 17th-century engraver, this view is based on Giovanni Battista Falda's 1676 map and is extremely rare, with only two known copies auctioned in the last 25 years.
