The work
Prospect of the old city of Rome seen from Mount Gianicolo by Giuseppe Vasi 1765
The panorama is inscribed in an "Index of notable things divided into eight days", which lists 390 monuments and sites, whose numbering corresponds to that of the guide that Vasi published in the same year: Historical index of the great prospectus of Rome.
The dedication to Charles III appears at the bottom left on an ancient slab. To the right of the coat of arms of Charles III are printed the verses of the 64th epigram of the Roman poet Martial:
HINC SEPTEM DOMINOS VIDERE MONTES / ET TOTAM LICET AESTIMARE ROMAN.
This engraving of great detail and precision represents a work of high artistic and documentary value. The scene is a notable example of urban view, a genre that gained popularity during the Baroque and Neoclassical periods. The artist was able to capture not only the architectural majesty of the city, but also the harmonious interaction between natural and built elements.
