The work

This highly detailed and attractive view of the Colosseum in Rome, published by Francois Halma in the early 18th century, shows the Colosseum seen from the west with Rome in the background. Around the building, people can be observed engaged in commercial, agricultural and other daily occupations.

Below the main view, there are two other views of Rome: one on the bottom right depicts the Basilica in the Vatican, while the one on the bottom left shows a church in the city. The upper image is based on a drawing by Lievin Cruyl, made during his stay in Rome between 1664 and 1676, while the lower images derive from the works of Francois Halma. The composition offers a detailed and historically significant representation of some of Rome's most important monuments.
