The artwork

Original and luminous eighteenth-century engraving of Venice, with a view from the square, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground is the Doge's Palace, painted transversally by Canaletto, and next to the palace are the two columns of Venice, San Marco and San Todaro. In front of the Doge's Palace, there is a gathering of people for the Piera del Bando (proclamation stone). In the background, beyond the columns, the island of San Giorgio Maggiore can be glimpsed. On the left side, there's a detail of the Basilica of San Marco.

The sky is cloudy, but the day remains fine. The engraving is dated 1740. Other variations of this work by Canaletto exist. The engraving is exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA.
