"Poplars on the Epte" is a series of paintings created by Claude Monet between 1891 and 1892. This series focuses, as the title suggests, on a group of poplars that lined the Epte River, a tributary of the Seine, near his home in Giverny.

Monet had already explored the concept of series with his famous "Haystacks" and Rouen Cathedral, and the poplars offered another ideal subject for investigating the changing effects of light and atmosphere.

The artist found himself in a race against time to complete the paintings, as the trees had been sold to a local timber merchant. It is said that Monet even negotiated with the merchant to postpone the felling of the trees so he could finish his series.

Monet painted the poplars in different seasons, at different times of day, and in varying weather conditions, capturing the subtle nuances of color and the transformations of the reflective forms on the water. The compositions often include the curve of the river, which leads the eye through the painting and emphasizes the verticality of the poplars.
