An original and luminous 18th-century view of Piazza San Marco, seen from the Piazzetta, by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In the foreground, on the right, is a detail of St Mark’s Basilica, with scenes of everyday life in the Piazzetta. Further back, set at an angle, stretches Piazza San Marco, with its buildings on all four sides. The sky is clear, with a few white clouds on the horizon. The painting, an oil on canvas, is undated.
